At the recent Biennial Conference on Chemical Education and American Chemical Society meetings, Thermo Fisher Scientific conducted a fun quiz to test participants' spectral interpretation skills. We presented spectra from infrared, Raman and NMR instrumentation and then asked participants to select a matching compound name from a list of multiple choices.
Congratulations to the following quiz winners!
BCCE Winners
Ann Sullivan, Professor of Chemistry, Reynolds Community College, Richmond, Virginia
Edith Osborne, Associate Professor, Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas
ACS Winners
Paula Delgato, PhD Chemist, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Andrew Karatjas, Assistant Professor, Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, Connecticut
The purpose of this experiment is to extract eugenol from whole cloves by co-distillation with indirect steam, steam that is generated in situ. Eugenol will be extracted from the distillate with dichloromethane and analyzed using the Thermo Scientific picoSpin 45 or 80 NMR spectrometers.
